En ningún momento los blancos pasaron apuro alguno, un gol tempranero y muchos intentos fallidos revelaron la diferencia entre los rivales. Apareció Kaká con un gol y en el final cerró Higuaín con otro tanto.

Casillas en el arco, Ramos seguía de central junto a Albiol, por las bandas Arbeloa y Marcelo. En medio campo X. Alonso junto a Granero y Guti. Más adelante Kaká con Benzema y Raúl. Real Madrid no tuvo problemas para acechar el arco rival, pases cortos en medio, jugadas por la banda, Raúl adelantado y Kaká con Benzema moviéndose de un lado a otro detrás de él, Arbeloa y Marcelo hicieron lo suyo a la hora de sumar jugadores al ataque. El primer gol llegaría a los 4 minutos de iniciado el encuentro, tiro libre desde la banda y pase preciso de Granero hacía Ramos que se aprovecha de la despistada defensa y con cabezazo a la esquina del arco marca.

Espanyol no se animó a cambiar su planteo e intentar ser más agresivo, a pesar del numeroso bloque puesto para detener a los blancos, la última línea defensiva dejaba las oportunidades suficientes para que los blancos busquen el segundo tanto. Guti y Granero se encargaron de la distribución del balón dejando a Kaká para el pase final hacia Benzema o Raúl, sería el portero visitante quien le niegue al capitán blanco 2 veces ese gol de entusiasmo que hace buen tiempo viene buscando, en el primer intento le quitó el grito con una estirada espectacular y en el segundo desvió otro cabezazo que devendría en el segundo tanto de los blancos bien aprovechado por Kaká.

Espanyol bajó los brazos y se dedicó a aprovechar sin más ni más algún error defensivo, el comienzo del segundo tiempo fue una continuación de las intenciones blancas, ataques por las bandas y oportunidades desperdiciadas, el portero evitaba la vergüenza general de su equipo con sus notables intervenciones. Llegaría el momento de los cambios en Real Madrid, recuperado Lass ingresaría en lugar de Guti, haciendo que Kaká vuelva a su posición central y Raúl deje el puesto de punta a Benzema retrocediendo líneas. Pocos minutos después el "pipita" recuperado de su lesión reemplazaría a Benzema en la labor de ataque. Los blancos bajaron el ritmo de acoso al arco rival, Kaká seguía tratando de encontrar su mejor nivel de juego pero en ningún momento pudo eludir a los defensores que se plantaban frente a él. Van der Vaart haría acto de presencia ante la salida de Raúl y pocos minutos después colocaría un balón preciso para que Higuaín haga lujo de lo que puede hacer en el área chica, buen control de balón y sangre fría para esperar el momento correcto de disparo. 3 - 0 y el pitazo final llegaba.
